Honolua Bay

Parking is only alongside the highway, and spaces can be limited. A short path through dense green forest leads down to a boulder-and-rock shoreline and concrete boat-ramp area. The rounded rocks can be slippery, especially at the water’s edge, so getting in and out is awkward if you need steady, level footing. There’s no sandy strip for beach lounging. A dependable restroom or drinking-water source isn’t identified here, so plan as if you’re on your own for both.

Honolua Stream carries silt into the bay, which is why the water near shore is often cloudy. Visibility usually improves farther out or toward the sides. The middle is a sandy channel that drops to roughly 60 feet at the bay’s mouth, while coral grows along both sides, mostly in about 10 to 40 feet of water. The northeast shore has especially abundant, varied coral; Accounts disagree on left-or-right directions, so don’t bank the visit on one specific side.

In calmer water, the draw is more than clear blue scenery: visitors often report schools of fish and turtles among the coral. The clearer reef water is farther out or along the sides, away from the silty inner shore. If the water is rough or visibility is poor, save the snorkel for another day rather than forcing the entry.

Summer is the calmer season for snorkeling and diving. Winter can bring powerful, hollow waves that draw experienced surfers to the bay. When the surf is high, stay out of the water and watch from the bluffs above instead; the elevated view takes in the whole curve of the bay and its green headlands. It’s also the safer place to photograph the break, rather than scrambling over wet shoreline rocks.

Honolua and adjacent Mokulēʻia make up a 45-acre Marine Life Conservation District established in 1978. Hawaiʻi’s rules prohibit fishing, harming marine life, and taking or altering coral, sand or other geological features, except for narrow listed cases. Treat the reef and shoreline as part of the attraction: leave the fish, coral and rocks where they are.
