Before you go

Getting there takes real experience

The route starts across the road from a small parking area beside the Karangarua River bridge, about 26 km south of Fox Glacier. Plan on at least two days. From Lame Duck Hut, the leg to Christmas Flat takes about three hours and crosses the Karangarua River twice and the Troyte River, with exposed slip faces and steep climbing along the way. Some parts use markers, but the detailed notes for this leg warn that much of it is unmarked. Go only if you’re well equipped and confident navigating serious backcountry. Summer and autumn are the preferred seasons; floods can happen any time, so avoid bad weather and rain. Dogs aren’t allowed.

Christmas Flat Hut is a standard four-bunk hut on grassy flats in the Karangarua Valley, below steep, jagged mountain walls. It’s an overnight stop on a remote, multi-day route, not a short detour from the highway. Keep it in mind if you’re planning a demanding trip into this part of Westland; it isn’t a casual stop.

There are four bunks, mattresses, heating and a non-flush toilet. Water comes from a nearby stream, with no treated drinking-water supply indicated, so plan to treat it before drinking. Bring your own meals; no food service is listed for the hut.

The hut sits among open grassy flats, with a rocky riverbed close by and steep schist peaks above. The forest changes with elevation: the route passes beech by the river, while higher slopes carry southern rātā, kāmahi and Hall’s tōtara. Small silver beech patches near the Troyte River mark the northern edge of beech country in this part of Westland. The current hut was built in 1999 to replace an older one.
