Guide
Jetty Lookout is the first lakeside viewpoint on Lake Matheson's Te Ara Kairaumati walk, reached through native rainforest from the car park. A bench faces the lake and the Southern Alps. Plan on about 45 minutes for the 2.4 km return walk. If you're mainly after the famous reflection, turn back here instead of walking the full circuit.
For the best chance of seeing Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman/Te Horokōau reflected, aim for a sunny, windless dawn or dusk; the lake is usually stillest then. A breeze or cloud can take the mirror away, so don't make a perfect reflection the only reason for coming. Leave some water below the peaks in your photo to show the reflection.
Near the start, the path crosses a suspension bridge over Clearwater Stream, then follows a gravel track through native rainforest to Jetty Lookout. It's the first of three named views around the lake. Retrace your steps to the car park, or continue to View of Views and Reflection Island for the full 4.4 km circuit.
Organic matter from the forest floor darkens the water. When the surface is still, that dark water makes the mountain reflections stand out.
Fox Glacier's last significant advance left a basin on the coastal plain. After the glacier retreated about 14,000 years ago, the basin filled with water and became Lake Matheson. The lake is a customary mahinga kai, a food-gathering place for Ngāi Tahu. Long-finned eels, or tuna, are abundant here and are a taonga, a treasured species.
Canada geese and mallard ducks are common on the lake. Native wetland birds you may see include pūkeko, paradise duck (pūtangitangi), and New Zealand scaup (pāpango). In the forest, listen for tūī, silvereyes (tauhou), fantails (pīwakawaka), kererū, and tomtits (miromiro).
Lake Matheson car park has free parking for cars and campervans, three marked mobility spaces, and toilets including an accessible toilet. There is no drinking water, so bring what you need. A café is beside the lake access, and Fox Glacier has more food and petrol about five minutes away by car. The short route is described as wheelchair accessible, though mapped access is marked limited; check whether it suits your needs. The walk is busiest in summer, November through April. Weather changes quickly, sandflies can be fierce, and mobile coverage may be unreliable.
