Lake Lucero Trail

Lake Lucero Trail is a 1.5-mile round trip on an unmaintained arroyo to a playa that helps supply White Sands' gypsum dunes. The route slopes gradually downhill through loose soil and uneven washes; the return is gently uphill. The payoff is the exposed selenite and the wide lakebed. I'd choose it for the geology and ranger context. If you're after a quick independent hike, skip it: access is only by scheduled tour.

Public access is by ticketed ranger-led tour, offered monthly from November through March. Meet at the Small Missile Range Gate on Highway 70 between mile markers 174 and 175, then follow the caravan 17.5 miles each way to the trailhead. Plan on about three hours for the full program, including the drive. Everyone must enter and leave with the caravan; leaving early isn't allowed. Photos and video are prohibited on missile-range land, so wait until the ranger says you're on park property before taking pictures.

The route follows a rough, unmaintained wash. NPS rates it moderate: the footing is loose and uneven rather than steep, and the return climbs gently. The playa is usually dry but can fill after heavy rain or snow, and soft mud can make the lakebed tricky. The walk isn't wheelchair or stroller accessible. Leashed pets are allowed, with a leash no longer than six feet. Leave the gypsum and selenite where they are.

Lake Lucero is one of the places that supplies the dunes. Water once carried gypsum into Lake Otero; as that lake evaporated around 12,000 years ago, it left selenite behind. Wind and erosion expose the crystals, and weather breaks them into grains that blow into the dune field. Look for exposed crystals in the steep arroyo gullies. Once the ranger allows photos, try framing the crystals against the broad playa to show how the close-up fits the larger landscape.
