Backcountry Camping Trail

The Backcountry Camping Trail is a 2-mile loop across loose gypsum dunes from Dunes Drive. Orange spade posts mark the way, and repeated 40–50-foot rises make it moderately strenuous despite the short mileage. Allow 2–3 hours; soft sand and repeated climbs make the walk longer than its mileage suggests. Go for a real walk among the dunes, not a quick stroll beside the road.

There isn’t a firm, obvious tread across every dune, so the orange posts matter. If blowing sand or a fallen marker hides the next one, turn back to the trailhead instead of guessing. The route has little shade and no water in the dunefield; fill up before leaving the visitor center. NPS advises against starting a hike at 85°F (30°C) or above.

From the dune ridges, the San Andres Mountains sit beyond the white dunefield. This is one of the park’s recommended sunset walks. For a photo, keep a line of foreground dunes in the frame with the mountains behind them; the layered ridges show the scale of the view.

Look for bleached earless lizards on the pale sand, soaptree yuccas rising above it, and the occasional white moth. They’re possible sightings, not a guarantee; the open dunes are the main event.

Park at the Backcountry Camping Trailhead lot, about 6.5 miles from the visitor center. No reservation is required. There are two vault toilets at the trailhead, but no water along the route; the visitor-center Trading Post sells bottled water and drinks. Dogs are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet.
