Best time to go

Weekdays and shoulder seasons are noticeably calmer than sunny weekends. The strongest argument for sleeping here is that the valley settles down once the day traffic and tour buses thin out, so early mornings and the last hours of daylight tend to be the quietest time to walk. Soft morning or evening light is kindest to the hotel garden, the stream and the valley walls. Pack a rain layer and something warm regardless of the forecast, because the valley runs damp and cool even when the surrounding lowlands feel mild.

More about The Glendalough Hotel

Why botherThe reason to book here is the address.

The reason to book here is the address. This is a traditional family-run hotel sitting in the wooded Glendalough valley, a short stroll from the monastic ruins, the lakes and the walking trails, so you can be out among the round tower and stone churches early in the morning or late in the day rather than arriving with everyone else in the middle of the day. It has been taking in guests for a very long time, with the Casey family running it since the 1960s, and it feels like that: a working country hotel rather than a design statement.

What you actually getSimple, traditional rooms with private bathrooms, in a range of layouts from singles and…
  • Simple, traditional rooms with private bathrooms, in a range of layouts from singles and doubles up to rooms that suit families or small groups.
  • Casey's Bar & Bistro for casual meals and a pint by an open fire, plus The Barn, an outdoor terrace area used for seating and barbecues.
  • A cooked breakfast to set you up before a morning on the trails, and a children's menu if you have kids in tow.
  • Free parking for hotel guests and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout.
  • Accessible rooms are available, including roll-in showers with grab bars. Note that the monastic site itself has uneven walkways and the old graveyard is difficult for wheelchair users, so staying here does not make every ruin easy to reach.
Using it as a baseTreat the hotel as a launch pad rather than a destination in itself.

Treat the hotel as a launch pad rather than a destination in itself. Drop the car, then do the monastic site and the Visitor Centre, the Upper and Lower Lakes, and as much of the valley walking as your legs allow, spread across an evening and the following morning. Having dinner and breakfast on site is genuinely convenient when you come back wet and tired and do not want to drive anywhere.

Honest drawbacksSet your expectations for a traditional three-star hotel with mixed reports.

Set your expectations for a traditional three-star hotel with mixed reports. Guests consistently praise the location and the bar and bistro, while others describe rooms and bathrooms that feel dated or poorly cleaned, and breakfast that varies from visit to visit. The hotel is busy and quiet rooms cannot be guaranteed, so bring earplugs if noise bothers you. If you want a polished or luxurious stay, book elsewhere and drive in. If you want to wake up already in Glendalough, this is the one hotel in the heart of the valley.
