A small cluster of iron‑rich hot springs, Chocolate Pots builds orange‑brown “chocolate” mounds right on the banks of the Gibbon River between Norris and Madison. It’s a true roadside curiosity: colorful, unusual, and worth a short stop if you’re already driving the Grand Loop in this section.
The prettiest mound sits across the river from the pullout; you’ll spot streaks of green, yellow, brown, and orange from mineral oxides and heat‑loving microbes. Another notable pot on the pullout side creates a small steaming cascade into the river. Expect to view through gaps in the trees from the top of the bank—no boardwalks or formal trail here.
Look for an unsigned, small pullout on the west side of the Grand Loop Road between Madison Junction and Norris Junction. From Norris it’s roughly 2.8 miles south; from Madison it’s about 10.5 miles north, around 0.9 miles north of the Artist Paint Pots turnoff. Views are best by walking the edge of the pullout/low stone wall and shifting your angle a bit upstream or downstream.
Stay up on the bank—do not descend to the river’s edge. The ground near the water is hot, slick, and can hide knee‑deep iron‑rich mud, and entering thermal areas is illegal. Water here can be around 130°F. Expect wildlife sign along the river corridor and give animals plenty of space.
These springs are unusually iron‑rich at near‑neutral pH. As iron in the hot water oxidizes at the surface, it precipitates (often with silica) to build the “chocolate” mounds. The springs discharge to the Gibbon River, part of a hydrothermal system that agencies monitor via river chemistry (like chloride) to track park‑wide activity.
It’s a five‑to‑fifteen‑minute pullout stop. Come early or later in the day for easier parking and softer, side‑lit photos. If the pullout is full, keep moving and try again later.
Easy add‑ons include Artist Paint Pots and Norris Geyser Basin. For waterfall fans, Gibbon Falls is close, and farther afield the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone’s Lower Falls is a trip highlight.
