Moose Falls is a roughly 30-foot plunge waterfall on Crawfish Creek, about 1.3 miles north of Yellowstone’s South Entrance. Heading north, the small turnout is on your right just after the creek crossing. It’s a worthwhile leg-stretch if you’re already driving this end of the park, but there isn’t much parking to count on. The South Entrance road is generally closed to regular vehicles in winter; check Yellowstone’s road status because dates shift with conditions.
A short walk from the pullout reaches the upper view. Visitors also describe a steeper, rougher descent toward the creek, but its current official access isn’t clear; stick with the upper viewpoint unless the park confirms the lower route is open. If you’re stopping for photos, early morning can bring mist and softer light, while afternoon sun can hit the water at an awkward angle.
Crawfish Creek drops over a rock ledge into a plunge pool. Members of the Arnold Hague Geological Survey named the falls in 1885, for the moose then plentiful in Yellowstone’s southern sections.
