Snake River Picnic Area

Overview

A mellow, scenic pause on the Snake River, this picnic area is about simple pleasures: a few tables near moving water, fresh air, and big-sky vistas. It’s not flashy, but it’s a great place to exhale between geysers and wildlife jams.

Facilities & Rules

• 8 picnic tables and 6 fire grates, plus a vault toilet (no running water—bring your own).
• Campfires only in the provided grates. Camp stoves and self‑contained charcoal grills are allowed in picnic areas.
• No overnight camping. Never feed wildlife; store all food, trash, and scented items when not in use. Coolers in pickup beds aren’t secure.

Wildlife & Safety

River corridors draw life. You may spot birds or small mammals working the banks; bison often graze near rivers elsewhere in the park. Keep distance and secure food at all times. Be bear‑aware: carry bear spray and know how to use it, hike in groups, make noise in brushy/low‑visibility areas, and if you encounter a bear, don’t run—back away slowly.

Best Time to Visit

It’s open 24 hours, but for a table and softer light, aim for mornings or late afternoon/early evening. Midday is the likeliest time for competition over the limited tables. Sunrise and golden hour add a warm glow to the river and surrounding hills.

Orientation

Use the official park map and check current road status before you drive—GPS can be quirky inside the park. And don’t confuse this spot with the Yellowstone River Picnic Area near Tower; that’s a different place entirely.
