Red Rock Point is the short-but-mighty spur you hike for that head‑on, close‑up look at the 308‑foot Lower Falls in the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. It’s a quick outing—about 0.6–0.7 miles total, out and back—with roughly 250 feet of elevation gain. Don’t let the stats fool you: the return climb is a quad burner, but the payoff is a dramatic, front‑row view into the canyon mist.
From Lookout Point on the North Rim, a signed spur drops off the main walkway and winds down switchbacks toward a small platform near the namesake red rock. Expect a mix of paved path, dirt, boardwalk, and long wooden stair sections with railings. You’ll feel enveloped by the canyon—this is one of the most immersive Lower Falls perspectives without committing to a longer hike. After soaking it in, you’ll return the same way, and that climb back is the workout.
This is short and steep. The route uses stairs and steep grades, and sections can be slick when wet or muddy, especially earlier in the season. Good traction matters. It’s not recommended for those with heart or respiratory conditions, and it isn’t suitable for wheelchairs or strollers.
Road access typically runs from mid‑spring through fall, conditions permitting. Start early to beat crowds and snag parking. Photographers love clear mid‑morning light—on sunny days, a rainbow often forms in the falls’ mist around 10 a.m. Earlier or later in the day also softens the light and thins the traffic.
Beyond the thunder of the falls, scan the canyon’s spires for nesting osprey in spring and summer. The canyon’s striking yellows, oranges, and greens come from hydrothermally altered rhyolite—part of why this view feels so vivid. The platform itself is small and can bottleneck, but many hikers still find it less congested than the rim railings if you time it right.
Park at Lookout Point along one‑way North Rim Drive and follow signs to the Red Rock Point spur. If the stairs aren’t your thing, Lookout Point is a very short, mostly level stroll with a superb view. For more variety without a big time investment, pair Red Rock Point with other nearby North Rim viewpoints like Grand View.
Your park entrance pass covers this trail; no special permit is needed. Pets are not allowed on park trails or boardwalks. Stay on signed paths and behind railings, watch kids near drop‑offs, and pace yourself on the climb back.
Use Lookout Point parking on one‑way North Rim Drive; the Red Rock Point spur leaves from the main walkway. There is a designated accessible space near the west end, but the spur itself has stairs.
Steep wooden stairs and slick surfaces when wet or muddy; exposure near drop‑offs; strenuous return climb; not recommended for heart or respiratory conditions.
