Grand View

Grand View is a roadside overlook on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. It opens onto the Yellowstone River far below the steep, yellow and orange walls, with Lower Falls in the wider view. It is one of four North Rim viewpoints, and I would stop here for the whole canyon sweep; the brink viewpoints bring you closer to the falls. For a photo, keep a ribbon of river in the frame so the canyon's depth reads clearly.

North Rim Drive is one-way and begins 1.2 miles south of Canyon Junction. The main view is a short walk from the parking area. A sidewalk connecting the Lookout Point and Grand View parking lots meets wheelchair accessibility standards, while most rim trails have steep grades or stairs; that accessible link does not describe every path along the canyon edge.

The canyon's oldest known form dates to about 160,000–140,000 years ago. Hydrothermal water altered and softened the rhyolite, then the Yellowstone River kept cutting into it and continues to widen and deepen the canyon. The altered rock and sediments make the bands of yellow, orange, and cream. Darker orange, brown, and green patches near the river can mark still-active hydrothermal areas.

Near Canyon Village, the National Park Service reports six to ten osprey nests usually occupied in this developed stretch of the canyon. Adults arrive from mid-April to early May, and osprey families typically leave by September. Binoculars can help if you want to look for birds fishing or tending nests.
