Arch Rock is the Highway 140 gateway into the park, where El Portal Road delivers you straight into the Valley. It’s a scenic approach through the Merced River canyon, and the namesake “arch” is a natural pair of granite boulders you’ll drive under—blink and you’ll miss it, and it only spans the inbound lane.

This is a fee station with ranger staff, entrance pass sales, park brochures/newspaper, restrooms, and a telephone. Two picnic tables sit nearby for a quick break. Entrance stations do not accept cash, so bring a card or digital payment.

If your goal is maximizing time in the Valley, this is the efficient choice. The approach is generally reliable in shoulder seasons and often feels less hectic than other west-side gateways, though lines can still build during busy periods.

Wildlife Along the Merced
Dawn and dusk are your best bet for spotting deer and, seasonally, black bears along the river corridor. Scan gravel bars and quiet edges for movement, and watch for river birds like dippers, mergansers, and kingfishers. Use paved pullouts; never stop on narrow canyon bends.

If you want a shot of the arch, have your camera ready before the booth—it comes up fast. There’s no safe place to stop at the arch itself.
Best Time to Visit
