Overview

Foresta Falls is a low-key gem on Crane Creek, tucked by the small Foresta community. It’s a mellow outing with real payoff: multiple cascades culminating in a main drop around 40 feet, usually with far fewer people than the park’s marquee waterfalls.

The Hike

Distance and elevation: about 1.5–1.8 miles round-trip with roughly 300 feet of elevation change. It’s downhill to the falls and uphill on the return, so pace yourself.
Route: Follow the old, closed Foresta Road. It’s an out-and-back on gravel/rocky surface—more of a road walk than a traditional trail—and not an officially maintained NPS trail.
Shade: Minimal. This area has burned in past fires, so bring sun protection and water.

What You’ll See

A series of cascades on polished granite leading to the main plunge. A sturdy bridge sits directly in front of the falls for an easy, face-on view.
In early season, you may catch lupines and other low-elevation wildflowers along the way. Downstream and upstream cascades exist but take extra care if you scramble—granite can be slick.

Season and Light

Best in spring during snowmelt when Crane Creek is running high; expect the flow to taper off later in summer and fall, especially in dry years.
The falls are west-facing, making afternoon the most flattering light for photos.

Logistics

Parking: A tiny pullout where pavement ends fits just a couple of cars. If it’s full, park back at the Foresta Road/old Coulterville Road junction about half a mile earlier. Don’t block driveways—this is a quiet residential area.
Services: None. No restrooms, no potable water, no picnic tables. Pack out everything you pack in.
Access: The old road may look driveable, but it’s rough, narrow, and closed—walk it instead. Bear spray isn’t allowed in the park.

Hazards and Etiquette

Footing can be rocky; wear sturdy shoes. Scrambling near the water brings risks of slick granite, ticks, and poison oak in brushy spots.
Respect Foresta residents by driving slowly and keeping noise and parking impacts down.

Best Time to Visit

Late morning to afternoon on spring weekdays hits a sweet spot for both flow and light, with fewer people and easier parking. Arrive early on weekends to snag a spot and enjoy the quiet.
