If you want enormous granite walls, a shimmering reservoir, and seasonal waterfalls without Yosemite Valley crowds, start at the dam-top viewpoint at Hetch Hetchy. Standing on O’Shaughnessy Dam, you get head-on views of the eight‑mile reservoir ringed by cliffs, with Tueeulala and Wapama Falls putting on their best show in spring and early summer.

Getting There & On-the-Ground
Access is by car only via a narrow, winding road. The gate operates sunrise to sunset, and vehicles/trailers over 25 feet long or 8 feet wide aren’t allowed. Expect a small lot by the dam and additional angle-in spaces after the dam; they can fill on weekends and mid‑day. Basic restrooms are available near the parking area. No swimming or boating is allowed in the reservoir, and pets aren’t permitted on the dam or hiking trails.
Best Times to Visit
- Spring (especially May) for peak waterfall flow and wildflowers.
- Early morning for cooler temps, easier parking, and softer light on the cliffs.
- Fall offers quieter vibes and pleasant hiking weather; summers can be very hot with little shade.
Wildlife & Nature Notes
This corner of the park mixes gray pine, incense-cedar, and manzanita with seasonal blooms like lupine and monkeyflower. Keep an eye out for rattlesnakes sunning near the trail, and be bear-aware. Bats are common in the broader Hetch Hetchy area at dusk.
Make It a Hike
From the viewpoint, continue through the tunnel for the classic shoreline walk to Wapama Falls (about 5 miles round trip), where spring runoff can splash the footbridges. Strong hikers can push farther to Rancheria Falls for a long day out. Another option: the Lookout Point Trail from near the entrance station (~2 miles round trip) for a different angle on the valley.

Bring plenty of water, sun protection, and snacks—services are minimal. Expect the drive to feel longer than it looks on the map and plan around the sunrise‑to‑sunset road hours.
