Overview
The Three Patriarchs are the headliners of one of the canyon’s most classic scenes—towering sandstone peaks named Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. You’ll see them from the short, paved path above the Court of the Patriarchs shuttle stop. It’s a quick, high‑reward detour that fits easily into any day in the canyon.
What You’ll See
From the overlook you get an unobstructed look at the Patriarchs, plus good angles on nearby features like Mount Moroni and The Sentinel. The viewpoint has interpretive displays that help you make sense of what you’re looking at.
Getting There
Hop off the Zion Canyon shuttle at Court of the Patriarchs (Stop 4). When shuttles aren’t running and the Scenic Drive is open, you can drive—but parking near this stop is very limited. The walk itself is roughly 0.1 mile on pavement with a noticeable climb; expect just a few minutes of effort. Dogs aren’t allowed on this path.
Geology & Backstory
These cliffs are Navajo Sandstone—ancient sand dunes turned rock—famous for sheer walls and cross‑bedded layers. The names “Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” date back to 1916, when a visiting minister helped popularize biblical names for Zion’s formations.
Best Time to Visit
Morning light usually treats the Patriarchs best, lighting the faces directly and making photography easier. After storms, keep an eye out for ephemeral waterfalls and moody low clouds. It’s popular throughout the day and year‑round, so go early if you want a quieter moment.
Practicalities
There are no facilities at this stop. The nearest restrooms and water are at Zion Lodge (Stop 5) and The Grotto (Stop 6). If you’re connecting hikes, note you can access the Sand Bench area from here, though its official trailhead is at the Lodge.
