Middle Emerald Pools Trail

Middle Emerald Pools is a moderate out-and-back from the Emerald Pools Trailhead across from Zion Lodge. A current trail description lists 2.2 miles round trip and 1–2 hours. A separate access assessment measures 0.9 mile one way from shuttle stop #5, close to the mapped tread's 0.88 mile; the published totals do not fully agree, so allow for 2.2 miles. The reward is a canyon view, a sandstone ledge, shaded woodland and small pools tucked beneath red cliffs.

From shuttle stop #5, follow the sidewalk across the Lodge lawn to the crosswalk, cross the road and bridge, then take the trail on the left. The first climb is the steepest and opens onto broad views down Zion Canyon. The path is unpaved and follows a sandstone ledge above Lower Emerald Pool Trail. The access assessment records a maximum grade of 38.1%, with nearly half the measured route at 10% grade or steeper; some staircase steps reach 10 inches. Stay back from cliff edges.

Further along, the route tucks against red sandstone through shaded pinyon-juniper woodland, then descends toward the pools. The tread is a mix of firm soil, hard rock or concrete, and a little soft sand. Expect an uneven ledge rather than a smooth promenade.

The emerald-colored pools sit above Lower Emerald Pool's small, ephemeral waterfalls. Water flow varies, so the falls may be slight or absent. The pools are fragile and an important water source for wildlife: stay out of the water, and do not swim. At the pools, a low view across the water can catch the sandstone shelf, trees and cliff reflections; the first open ledge is the better stop for a down-canyon panorama.

Middle Emerald Pools connects with the other Emerald Pools trails and the Kayenta Trail. Those linkups make a longer outing with different mileage; the 2.2-mile figure is for the standalone Middle Pools out-and-back. Restrooms and water-filling stations are at Zion Lodge, not along the trail. Park entrance fees apply, reservations are not required, and pets are not allowed.
