Lower Sauma Ridge Overlook is a roadside viewpoint on Tutuila’s northeast coast, facing Pola Island across Vaiʻava Strait. If you’re driving Route 006 between Afono and Vatia, it’s a worthwhile stop for the island’s tall, narrow sea cliffs without taking the separate Lower Sauma Ridge Trail. The overlook is accessible with assistance; that description applies to the viewpoint, not the adjoining trail.

Pola Island rises steeply from the water, with a long, narrow profile that makes the view easy to pick out. It’s also a seabird nesting area, so you’re looking at habitat as well as a striking coastline. For a photo, leave some water around the cliffs so the island’s steep sides stand clear against the strait.

Why the cliffs stand outVaiʻava Strait is a National Natural Landmark.

Vaiʻava Strait is a National Natural Landmark. Its steep cliffs and offshore rock outliers show how waves have worn back the volcanic coast, leaving more resistant rock standing apart from shore. The island’s sharp outline is a good place to see that rugged edge from above.

Keep the overlook and trail separateThe overlook is on Route 006 between Afono and Vatia, with roadside parking indicated.

The overlook is on Route 006 between Afono and Vatia, with roadside parking indicated. A park faleoʻo and the Lower Sauma Ridge Trailhead sit across the road from each other. The trail is a separate, steep, rugged and unimproved route; don’t treat its access as part of the overlook visit.
