Ofu Beach

Ofu Beach is a south-coast stretch of pale sand on Ofu Island, fronted by the shallow, protected reef lagoon and backed by steep green peaks. The beach and Ofu Lagoon belong to one visit: people come to snorkel among coral and fish, walk the shore, or sit in the shade. Visitors often describe it as quiet, so come for the landscape and water rather than a serviced beach day.

NPS recommends snorkeling around mid-tide, always with a buddy, and watching for rip currents. Good snorkeling is reached from the beach, about a 20-minute walk from Vaoto Lodge. There are no gear rentals at the lagoon, so arrange snorkel equipment before walking down; the lodge's small shared supply is first-come, not guaranteed.

Ofu's south-coast pools are part of a rare coral research site. At low tide, some pools are cut off from the ocean and regularly rise above 31°C (88°F); resident corals withstand the heat, then cool as the tide returns. Scientists study how they survive conditions that would stress most reefs. Across the park's reefs, NPS records more than 250 coral species.

For a beach photo, frame the pale sand and lagoon with the sharp green peaks across the water. Morning light is especially useful for seeing the shallow reef's coral and fish. From August through November, southern humpback whales frequent Manu'a; mothers and calves are sometimes seen beyond the surf break, though sightings are never assured.

Ofu has no restaurants, so bring meals and supplies. There is no medical care on the island, and emergency response may take days. Arrange transportation ahead: there is no formal public transportation among the remote Manu'a islands, and the beach's snorkeling access is a walk rather than a quick roadside stop.
