Carrington Hut

Overview

Carrington Hut is the big, dependable base in the upper Waimakariri Valley, near the White River confluence. Built in 1975 (replacing an older club hut), it sits around 818 m and anchors classic adventures like Barker Hut, Waimakariri Falls, Harman Pass to the Taipo, and the Three Passes. If you want one hut that opens up a lot of country, this is it.

Facilities & Fees

• 36 bunks with mattresses, heated by a wood stove (bring your own cooker and utensils).
• Water is collected from the roof into a tank; treat or boil before drinking.
• Long‑drop toilets.
• A radio links to the Arthur’s Pass Visitor Centre during office hours.
• Fees: adults $25/night; youth (5–17) $12.50; under‑5s free. Pay with Serviced Hut tickets (honesty box) or a Backcountry Hut Pass.
• Booking change: from December 2, 2025 this hut moves onto DOC’s online booking system (bookings opening for stays from Friday, December 5); it remains unlocked for emergency shelter.

Getting There (4–6 hours from SH73)

Low river levels (fastest): From Klondyke Corner, follow the 2 km gravel road to the riverbed and head up the Waimakariri, crossing as needed. Aim for Turkey Flat; cross to the true left below Greenlaw Creek, then back to the true right by Harper Creek, and continue to the short marked access to the hut.

Higher water option: Take the O’Malley Track on the true right immediately south of the Waimakariri road bridge. It climbs above bluffs to Turkey Flat, then follows poles across the flats toward Anti Crow Hut and on through beech forest. Note: the river has shifted—this “high‑water” route now still requires at least one Waimakariri crossing near/above Anti Crow, so it is not viable in true high flows. Be prepared to turn back.

Safety: Rivers First, Everything Else Second

Crossings of the Waimakariri, Greenlaw, Harper and side streams are the crux. If flows are high, discoloured, carrying debris, or roaring, don’t cross. Choose wider, slower sections (often between bends), secure your gear, keep boots on for foot protection, and loosen shoulder straps while keeping the hip‑belt fastened for stability. Avoid narrow pinch‑points where current is faster and deeper. After rain or snowmelt, expect to wait or retreat.

Day Trips and Onward Routes

• White River: 6–7 hours return up the true left. The Clough Cableway is gone; only cross in low flows. A steep, unmarked route to CMC’s Barker Hut branches at the head of the valley and is for experienced parties only.
• Waimakariri Falls Hut: a classic valley‑head trip beyond Carrington.
• Through‑routes: Harman Pass to the Taipo and the Three Passes Track begin here—alpine experience and good conditions required.

Geology & Setting

On the way you’ll pass glacially sculpted roche moutonnée—hard rock knobs smoothed and plucked by ancient ice. It’s a neat reminder you’re tramping through a landscape carved by big forces.

Best Time to Visit

Go after settled weather when rivers are low. Start early so you can take time at crossings or wait for levels to drop. Winter travel can be slow and demanding when snow lies in the valley; plan conservative daylight and turnaround times. Until December 2, 2025 it’s first‑come‑first‑served; from then, book online—36 bunks give good capacity but popular weekends still fill.
