Anti Crow Hut is a remote eight-bunk backcountry hut on a flat near the bush edge in the Waimakariri valley. It’s reached from SH73 by O’Malleys Track: 7 km and about three hours each way. This is an overnight backcountry trip, not a quick stop. DOC requires bookings year-round and keeps no walk-in bunks, so reserve before setting out.
O’Malleys Track starts just south of Bealey road bridge. It passes above bluffs to Turkey Flat, then crosses rough gravel and grass flats to the hut. Jordan Stream must be crossed; DOC says not to attempt it in high flow or when rain is forecast. Parts of the flats are only partly marked, so follow the intermittent poles and stay high above the thorny matagouri lower down.
You’ll find eight bunks, mattresses, heating and non-flush toilets. Tap water is untreated and needs to be boiled before use. No food service is listed for this remote hut, so plan to carry meals for the overnight. Sandflies have been reported around the entrance.
The current hut was built by the New Zealand Forest Service in 1961 as a six-bunk design. A 15-person Backcountry Trust volunteer team completed a full renovation in 2025, converting the sleeping platforms to eight bunks. That’s why older trip notes may still give the smaller capacity. Anti Crow Hut is also the first hut on the Carrington Hut Route.
