Hawdon Hut

Hawdon Hut is a serviced 20-bunk backcountry hut in Arthur’s Pass National Park’s Hawdon Valley. Reaching it takes an 18 km return walk on an advanced track, with a stated walking time of 6–8 hours. It works as a demanding day walk or an overnight destination; book a bunk ahead if you plan to stay. Several river crossings shape the trip, so do not set out during or after heavy rain. If the first Hawdon River crossing is not easy, turn back rather than hoping the later crossings will be better.

Start at Hawdon Shelter Campsite, reached from SH73 via Mt White Road. The track crosses the Hawdon River, moves between open valley, forest, riverbed and a marked four-wheel-drive track, then returns to river and forest sections. The last crossing is Discovery Stream, about 200 m before the hut. River levels can rise quickly, and high water can delay the return; carry spare food in case you are held at the hut. Follow the orange track markers. Coloured markers and tape in the valley are for staff access, not the public route.

The hut has 20 bunks with mattresses, a shared kitchen and dining space, and a log burner for heat. Bring your own cooker, utensils and food. The tap water is untreated, so boil it before drinking; the toilets are non-flush. The indoor space is generous for a backcountry hut, but this is a remote overnight stop with no food service.

Hawdon Valley is one of only five known wild locations for the critically endangered orange-fronted parakeet, or kākāriki karaka. The valley is also habitat for great spotted kiwi, blue duck, rock wren, yellowhead and yellow-fronted parakeet. Predator-control work supports the parakeet population here; sightings are never guaranteed.
