Edwards Hut

Edwards Hut is a serviced 16-bunk backcountry hut above the Edwards River in Arthur’s Pass National Park. It’s a proper overnight walk, not a quick stop: from Greyneys Shelter on SH73, allow 9.5 km and 4–6 hours each way. Book ahead. Cross the Bealey only if it’s easy and safe; these unbridged rivers rise quickly, so don’t start during or just after heavy rain.

Mattresses and a log burner are provided, but bring your food, cooker and utensils. The tap water is untreated and must be boiled. There’s a non-flush toilet. Pack warm layers too: visitors have described cold nights, even with a fire available. Dogs aren’t allowed on the route.

The route begins with crossings of the Bealey and Mingha rivers, then alternates riverbed and forest before crossing the East Branch of the Edwards. From there, a rough track climbs and drops around steep gullies above the river canyon, with exposed drop-offs. Near the end, the forest opens into red tussock flats; it’s easy to lose the line among the tussocks, so keep track of the route markers.

The hut sits above the river, looking up-valley toward Taruahuna Pass, Falling Mountain and the Polar Range. Waterfalls appear from the rough track above the Edwards River gorge, then the upper flats give you a broad view of the hut’s mountain setting.

The current hut was built in 1969 after an earlier four-bunk hut burned that April. The route beyond the hut continues toward Taruahuna Pass, where debris from a landslide off Falling Mountain records the 1929 earthquake.

The approach moves through beech forest and alpine scrub before opening onto tussock terraces. Robins, riflemen and tomtits are commonly reported along the route; whio may be seen in the fast water, though sightings aren’t guaranteed.
