Bow Summit is the high point of the Icefields Parkway and the classic perch above Peyto Lake. It’s the place for that fox-shaped, electric-blue lake view—plus sweeping peaks and glacier backdrops—without committing to a big mountain day.

Expect a gentle grade with a few minor switchbacks and increasingly open, photo-friendly terrain near the top.
Winter Use
Bow Summit is a go-to for backcountry skiers seeking mellower, more conservative terrain options along the Parkway. That said, the upper slopes are real avalanche country—winter and spring travel demands training, gear, and conservative decision-making.
Geology & Backstory
These classic Rockies vistas are the handiwork of glaciers carving into ancient sedimentary rocks. You can still spot Peyto Glacier from the viewpoints. The Icefields Parkway itself opened in 1940, and Bow Summit has been a marquee stop ever since.
Practicalities
There are two parking lots (lower for cars; upper often used by buses) and vault toilets on site. No food, water fill, store, or gas here—stock up before you go. Exposure near the summit can make weather feel harsher than at the road.
Best Time to Visit
Summer through early fall brings the brightest lake color and the least snow. To dodge tour bus crowds and snag parking, arrive early or late in the day. If you’re skiing, time your visit to stable conditions and daylight—avalanche forecasts rule your day.
