Peyto Lake Lower Viewpoint Trail

This 1.2-mile out-and-back starts at the Peyto Lake parking area and follows the paved approach toward the main lookout before continuing to a quieter second viewpoint. The official Parks Canada trail listing covers the maintained lookout; this route is the rougher extension for visitors who want a more open angle over the lake.

Walk west from the parking area on the paved path. Near the main lookout, take the established unpaved branch toward the clearing marked on the map as Peyto Lake View. It is a real mapped footpath, but there is no official platform at the second viewpoint. Return by the same route.

Allow about 1.5 hours, including time at the viewpoint. The approach climbs gently, then the spur becomes uneven and rough, with loose rock and exposed edges near the clearing. This is not a wheelchair or stroller route. Do not cross fences, cut switchbacks, or scramble onto unstable slopes.

The second viewpoint has a broader, less crowded look toward Peyto Lake, the glacier, and the surrounding peaks. Use the established clearing and include a few foreground rocks for scale. Toilets are available near the parking area, and you should bring water and everything else you need for the walk. Keep pets leashed, give wildlife plenty of room, and carry a valid Banff park pass.
