Bow Summit Lookout

Bow Summit Lookout is a moderate out-and-back hike from the Bow Summit/Peyto Lake parking lot. The route is about 4.2 miles (6.8 km) round trip and takes roughly 2.5 hours. It combines a busy paved approach to the Peyto Lake viewing platforms with a quieter, rougher climb beyond them to a high clearing with wide views toward Bow Glacier, Peyto Glacier, the Icefields Parkway, and surrounding peaks.

Follow the paved interpretive path from the parking lot to the Peyto Lake platforms. Continue on the loop beyond the main lookout and take the middle option at the three-way junction. After the pavement levels out, pass the bird-themed interpretive sign and follow the gravel/old fire-road route as it climbs through forest and open alpine terrain to the Bow Summit Lookout. Return by the same route. The lookout is about the larger mountain-and-glacier panorama; the lower Peyto Lake platform remains the place for the classic lake view.

Parking fills quickly in summer, and the route becomes less obvious and more exposed beyond the paved viewpoint. Bring layers and stay on the established route: snow and ice can linger early or return in fall, and weather changes quickly at this elevation. A valid Banff National Park entry pass is required.
