Tucked into Banff’s Bear Street/Bison Courtyard, Old Crag Cabin is a compact slice of early townsite life. Built between 1886 and 1890 from lodgepole pine and Engelmann spruce logs, it’s one of the town’s oldest surviving structures—simple, sturdy, and lovingly preserved.

The cabin shows off classic Hudson’s Bay Corner-style details: log walls, whitewashed vertical corner posts, deep eaves, and a high pyramid hip roof. Step inside for a modern twist on a historic space—Jolene’s Tea House currently operates here, and in recent years the cabin has also been used as a small storefront for local arts and tickets.
Why It Matters
This little building punches above its weight in Banff lore. After its late-1880s start as a baker’s home and shop, Norman Luxton ran the Crag & Canyon newspaper here from 1902–1929. Over the decades it morphed into a butcher, a gas station, a funeral home, and a metalwork studio before restoration in 1999. The cabin later picked up a municipal award for restoration and adaptive reuse.
