This eight‑passenger gondola whisks you from the base at roughly 1,659 m to Sunshine Village at about 2,159 m in around 20 minutes, covering 4.5–5 km. It’s one of the most popular summer experiences here because it delivers you straight into high-alpine terrain without the grind.
The ride serves up nonstop Rockies scenery—broad valleys, rugged peaks, and, in summer, meadows bursting with wildflowers. From the village you can step onto well-signed Sunshine Meadows trails for everything from short strolls to longer rambles. Expect a good chance of spotting marmots and ground squirrels; deer and the occasional elk, goat, or bear are possible but never guaranteed.
From the upper gondola terminal, add the Standish Chairlift to reach about 2,385 m and its viewing deck—billed as the highest easily accessible viewpoint around here. You’ll get a 360-degree sweep of the Continental Divide and a bird’s‑eye look at pristine alpine lakes.
Sightseeing is a summer thing (typically late June to early September). A recent example season ran 8 am–6 pm daily, with the Standish lift usually closing earlier and the last gondola download firm at 6 pm—always check current times. You can drive to the base (parking is available) or use a free shuttle from town. A valid Parks pass is required for visiting.
It’s the biggest eight‑passenger gondola in the area and the most straightforward way to step into true alpine meadows—minimal effort, maximum views. Wildflower season is the sweet spot if you can time it.
Weather changes fast at altitude. Bring layers, a rain shell, sun protection, water, and snacks. Sightseeing is for foot passengers only—no sports equipment. Dogs are allowed on designated trails on a short (≤2 m) leash; confirm current pet policies before boarding. Grabbing the official summer trail map makes route-finding simple once you’re up.
At the village you’ll find food, a café/restaurant, restrooms, a shop, and even on‑mountain lodging—handy if you want to linger in the high country overnight.
