Park at the Banff Sunshine base area and ride the summer gondola to Sunshine Village; the loop starts in the Sunshine Meadows above the village. If lifts aren’t running, hiking the access road adds significant distance and elevation.
High-alpine weather changes quickly; check gondola/chairlift status before you go. Stay on designated trails to protect fragile meadows. Bears are possible. No pets allowed.
Why hike it
If you want big-mountain scenery for little effort, this loop delivers. High above Sunshine Village, the trail rolls through open alpine meadows to the postcard-clear Rock Isle Lake, with panoramic views that can include distant Mount Assiniboine on clear days. The area is crisscrossed with well-signed paths and short spurs, including the Standish Viewpoint platform that overlooks all three lakes in the basin.
The experience
This is a 2.9-mile (4.7 km) total loop on easy grades with roughly 440 ft (135 m) of gain. Expect packed dirt and gravel tread with occasional boardwalks where the meadows are fragile. Most hikers circle Rock Isle Lake and continue around tranquil Larix and Grizzly Lakes for a fuller taste of the Sunshine Meadows. If you want to stretch your day, there are longer, moderate extensions across the meadows and toward Twin Cairns. Interpretive signs along the way touch on the Continental Divide, local ecology, and the glacial story behind the basin’s hummocky terrain and kettle lakes.
Scenery and wildlife
Summer paints the meadows in wildflowers, and early fall switches the palette to golden larches—both prime photography seasons. Keep an eye out (and ears open) for marmots sunning on rocks. Deer, elk, and occasionally bears wander the area.
Access and crowds
Most visitors ride the Sunshine Village gondola (and sometimes the chairlift) to pop into the alpine quickly—one reason this loop can be busy near Rock Isle Lake. Continue toward Larix and Grizzly Lakes or out to the viewing platform for quieter stretches. Ski infrastructure is visible in places; the natural beauty still wins out.
Best time to hike
June through September is prime, with peak wildflowers mid-summer. Early fall brings larch color and lighter crowds—just double-check gondola and chairlift operations. For calmer trails and the best light on the lakes, go early or late in the day.
