Rock Isle Lake Loop

This is a 3.5-mile (5.7 km) loop with roughly 910 feet (277 m) of cumulative ascent. The stored line represents the full visitor walk, including the required return along the shared approach; it does not include the gondola ride from the base area. Expect uneven hard aggregate and gravel, narrow sections, exposed roots and steps in places. The route stays at high elevation, so even its moderate distance can feel demanding.

Rock Isle Lake is the route's signature viewpoint, with broad views across Sunshine Meadows and the surrounding Continental Divide. The Larix and Grizzly basin adds alpine water, wildflowers and larch stands. Marmots, deer and elk are possible, and bears may be present; keep food secure and give wildlife space. Stay on signed paths to protect fragile meadows.

Park at the Banff Sunshine base area on Sunshine Village Access Road and take the fee-based gondola to Sunshine Village; the hiking route begins at the upper terminal. The official map also shows the Standish viewing area and the Rock Isle, Larix and Grizzly junctions. Check lift operations before setting out, and expect the busiest conditions near the lake viewpoints.
