Sunshine Meadows

Why go

Perched around 2,300 meters on the Continental Divide, Sunshine Meadows is Banff’s easiest ticket to true alpine: sweeping ridgelines, a carpet of summer wildflowers, and three gorgeous lakes—Rock Isle, Grizzly, and Larix. On clear days you’ll snag wide panoramas, including Mount Assiniboine’s classic pyramid.

The experience

Ride the Sunshine Village Gondola, then hop the Standish Chairlift to the Standish Viewpoint for instant 360-degree scenery over the lakes and surrounding peaks. From there, well-graded, signed trails fan out through broad meadows and lichen-streaked rock. Expect marmots, ground squirrels, and pikas darting between boulders, plus frequent birdlife; larger mammals are possible but uncommon.

• Standish Viewpoint: the prime perch with all-lakes views.
• Lakes loops: mellow, photogenic circuits linking Rock Isle, Grizzly, and Larix—strolls to moderate outings, all on maintained paths designed to protect fragile alpine plants.

Access and facilities

There’s no public road to the meadows—access is by gondola (and optional chairlift) from the Sunshine Village base, or a long, steep hike up. At the upper gondola station (Sunshine Village) you’ll find washrooms and food options; once you’re out on the trails, services are sparse apart from a few pit toilets.

Know before you go

• Stay on signed trails—off-trail hiking is prohibited to protect the slow-to-recover alpine tundra.
• Dogs are allowed only on designated trails and must be leashed (max 2 m).
• Weather swings are real up here: sun, wind, and sudden storms are all on the table.

Best time to visit

Late June to early September is the sweet spot for snow-free paths and peak wildflowers. Book gondola/chairlift tickets in advance during peak season. Aim for a clear day—the views are the whole show—and you’ll typically find fewer people here than at the park’s headline lakes, even on busy weekends.

What to bring

Layers, rain shell, sun protection, camera, and enough water and snacks for your loop. Trails are exposed, so plan for wind and intense sun even in midsummer.
