Twin Cairns and Monarch Viewpoint

This is the Sunshine Meadows hike you do for big, open alpine scenery without a brutal climb. Starting from Sunshine Village (most hikers ride the gondola up), the route links Twin Cairns and the Monarch Viewpoint on well-signed alpine paths across meadows and gentle ridges. Expect huge sightlines toward The Monarch and surrounding peaks, with larch stands glowing in fall and wildflowers peaking in mid-summer.

Distance varies depending on your exact loop, but plan on roughly 4.6 miles total when starting from the upper village and using the in-bounds network to form a loop between Twin Cairns and Monarch Viewpoint. Most hikers take 2–3 hours at a moderate pace. Surfaces are maintained dirt and gravel with some rocky sections—nothing technical in good weather. If you skip the lifts or start from the road-side parking and walk up to the village, you’ll add significant distance and elevation and change the feel of the day.

This area is exposed. You’ll get all the sun and all the weather: bring layers, rain protection, and sunscreen. Storms roll in fast at this elevation. It’s also sensitive alpine terrain—stay on signed trails through the meadows.

Logistics matter here. Summer access typically involves a paid gondola (and optionally the Standish Chairlift) to reach the upper trails quickly; check lift hours and the time of the last download before you start. Lift closures for weather can happen. No special hiking permit is required beyond your park pass, but budget for the lift if you want the easy version.

Scenery-wise, this one delivers: sweeping meadows, ridge-top viewpoints, and a quieter feel than the more famous Rock Isle Lake loop. If you want a short, family-focused intro to Sunshine Meadows and don’t mind company, Rock Isle is the busier alternative; for broader panoramas with fewer crowds, Twin Cairns and Monarch Viewpoint punch above their weight.

Best time to hike: late June through August for wildflowers and dry trail, and September for crisp air and golden larches. Outside this window the area is snowbound and functions as ski terrain—great on skis, not a hiking objective.
