The Onion

Overview

A rounded, dome-like summit perched above Bow Lake and Bow Glacier, The Onion delivers huge panoramas of the Wapta Icefield, Iceberg Lake, and the Bow Valley. It’s a classic, quieter objective for hikers and scramblers who want big-mountain scenery without the crowds.

Route at a Glance

Start from Bow Lake by the historic lodge area and follow the lakeshore toward Bow Glacier Falls. Continue up toward Bow Hut; from there the route becomes more rugged and less defined, weaving across glacially scoured ribs and stream crossings. The southwest side of The Onion uses a series of ledges that trend up and left toward the icefield; cairns appear in places, but expect to pick your own line. Near the top, the terrain eases onto a broad, plateau-like summit.

• Elevation gain: about 740–1013 m; summit around 2667 m
• Time: plan on 6–9.5 hours, plus photo/exploration time

Difficulty and Risks

This is an off-trail hike/scramble with moderate hands-on moves. Above Bow Hut, navigation matters—visibility issues or whiteout make it unpleasant and potentially unsafe. One short, polished chockstone step can be awkward for some. Loose rubble and moraine travel are tiring. This is true bear country; carry spray and know how to use it.

Scenery and Wildlife

Expect glaciated peaks, moraines, waterfalls, and wildflower patches in season. Marmots and pikas are common in talus; mountain goats show up occasionally. Both black and grizzly bears inhabit the area—stay alert and give all wildlife ample space.

Best Time to Visit

Go on a clear, stable-weather day—views are the whole point, and route-finding is easier when the summit is visible from across Bow Lake. Start early to manage the long day and typical afternoon weather. In snow seasons or if snow lingers near the icefield, check the regional avalanche bulletin before committing.

Planning Notes

• Facilities end at the Bow Lake parking area (pit toilets there). Bow Hut has a backcountry outhouse for hut users.
• Bow Hut dates to 1968 and serves as a key waypoint for Wapta travel, but overnights require reservations.
• There’s no transport to the trailhead; you’ll need your own vehicle.
