Upper Waterfowl Lake is the quieter, photogenic sibling in the Waterfowl Lakes duo—glacially fed, vividly turquoise, and framed by big-name peaks like Mount Chephren. It’s an easy leg-stretcher right off the Icefields Parkway that rewards minimal effort with maximum scenery.
Why it’s special
The lake’s color comes from suspended “rock flour” ground up by nearby glaciers, and when the wind dies down, Chephren’s pyramid profile mirrors across the water. It’s generally less busy than the park’s headline lakes, so you get room to breathe—and shoot those reflections—in peace.
What to do
- Scenic strolls: A short, easy out-and-back leads to the shore and viewpoints—perfect for a snack break and a panorama.
- Longer hikes: Trails to Chephren Lake and Cirque Lake start nearby, offering bigger days if you want them.
- Paddling: Calm days are outstanding for canoeing or kayaking amid towering peaks.
- Fishing: Allowed with a Parks Canada permit (not a provincial one).
- Camping: The adjacent Waterfowl Lakes Campground (first-come, first-served) sits between Upper and Lower Waterfowl Lakes, making sunrise and sunset sessions a breeze.

- Facilities live at the campground: potable water, flush toilets and dry toilets; no showers. The campground typically operates late June to early September.
- No services at the lake: no store, food, gas, or Wi‑Fi; expect no cell coverage. The nearest services are at Saskatchewan River Crossing.
