Two glacial siblings—Upper and Lower Waterfowl Lake—sit right off the Icefields Parkway, flashing that unreal turquoise the Rockies are famous for. With Mount Chephren looming over the water, it’s a stop that punches above its weight for views, photos, and a quick leg-stretch.

Why it’s worth your time

This is one of the easiest “wow” moments on the Parkway. You can pull over for a classic vista of Upper Waterfowl Lake, wander short paths to the shore, or base yourself here at the campground tucked between the lakes. Calm mornings and evenings often deliver mirror-like reflections across that glacial blue.

What to do

• Photography: The roadside turnout at Upper Waterfowl Lake frames up effortless lake-and-peak shots—come early or late for calm water and soft light.
• Paddling: Launch at Lower Waterfowl Lake (there’s a Parks self‑certification box for watercraft) and portage roughly 1 km to Upper Waterfowl for a quieter paddle.
• Camping: The large Waterfowl Lakes Campground (116 sites, FCFS) sits between the lakes, handy for sunrise/sunset sessions and quick lakeshore strolls.
• Fishing and swimming: Angling is allowed with a national park fishing permit; the water is beautiful but cold, so keep dips short.

The setting

These lakes are glacially fed, which is why they glow that electric blue. At roughly 1,700 meters, weather flips fast—bring layers even in midsummer. When the wind dies, you can catch textbook reflections of Mount Chephren on Upper Waterfowl Lake.

Wildlife

Expect waterfowl and typical Rockies residents: think birds of prey and the occasional ungulate. Dawn and dusk are your best bets for sightings—always carry bear spray and give wildlife space.

Practicalities

• Campground basics: First-come, first-served; one main washroom with hot/cold running water and flush toilets, plus several dry toilets. No reservations and no cell service.
• Boating: Complete Parks’ watercraft self‑certification at the Lower Waterfowl put‑in; staff may check. The ground here can be soft.
• Services: Don’t expect food, fuel, or Wi‑Fi at the lakes—stock up before you drive the Parkway.

Best time to visit

• Time of day: Sunrise for glassy reflections and low crowds; golden hour light pops the turquoise. Evenings are quieter once day-trippers move on.
• Day of week: Midweek is noticeably calmer than weekends in peak season.
• Season notes: Mid-summer brings wildflowers; expect the campground and pullouts to fill early during summer holidays.
