Bourgeau Lake

The trail climbs through forest beside Wolverine Creek, with rooty and rocky sections and several mountain-stream crossings. Views are limited for much of the ascent, but the route opens into the lake basin near the end. The lake sits in a dramatic cirque surrounded by cliffs and high peaks, making the long approach worthwhile.

This is an out-and-back hike from the designated Bourgeau Lake parking area to Bourgeau Lake. The 8.3-mile distance is the visitor's total return distance; the physical corridor is stored once from the parking-area trailhead to the lake. The rough trail continues another 2.2 km one way from Bourgeau Lake toward Harvey Pass, but that higher extension is a separate destination and is not part of this trail record.

The trailhead is on the south side of the Trans-Canada Highway about 13 km west of Banff. Use the designated Bourgeau Lake parking area; it has limited paved parking and two gender-neutral outhouses. Highway parking is illegal and unsafe. Dogs are allowed on leash, and there are no facilities along the route beyond the trailhead.

Expect a sustained climb and uneven footing, with stream crossings and a steeper final approach to the basin. Carry bear spray, make noise, and follow standard wildlife precautions. Weather can change quickly in the mountains, and snow or ice is possible outside the main summer and early-fall hiking season. Check current park access and trail information before setting out.
