Muleshoe Picnic Area is a quiet day-use stop along the Bow Valley Parkway set in one of the park’s rare montane forests. It sits beside the Bow River with easy access to tranquil Muleshoe Lake, so you get water views, meadows, and a mix of aspen, willow, and spruce without the crowds of the big-name hotspots.

Why it’s worth a stop

If you’re cruising the Parkway, this is a mellow pull-in where you can actually hear birds and the river. The montane habitat is a tiny slice of the park overall, so it’s a great place to get that landscape—flat meadows, mixed forest, and wetland edges—all in one go. During seasonal vehicle closures on the Bow Valley Parkway (May 1–June 25 and select fall dates), it’s an especially pleasant destination for cyclists and walkers.

What you’ll see

Expect open Bow Valley vistas, the Bow River curling past, and glimpses of Muleshoe Lake from short paths near the parking area. It’s all about simple scenery: meadows, shoreline textures, and mountain backdrops. Bring a camera if you like softer, quieter scenes rather than dramatic summits.

Wildlife

This habitat draws elk and deer, and both black and grizzly bears pass through—spring and fall are particularly good for sightings. Winter outings here have focused on moose tracking in the snow, which tells you the species uses this area when conditions are cold. Birders will enjoy the wetland and river corridor: expect waterfowl and songbirds moving through.

Know before you go

Amenities are basic: picnic tables and outhouses, and that’s about it—there’s no potable water, food service, or nearby gas. Keep food secure and clean up well; this is active wildlife habitat. Late spring and summer can bring mosquitoes thanks to the nearby water. On sunny peak days, the area can fill fast.

Best time to visit

• Spring and fall for wildlife activity and quieter vibes.
• During Bow Valley Parkway vehicle closures (May 1–June 25 and select fall dates) if you want a bike-friendly, low-traffic experience.
• In summer, arrive earlier in the day to snag a table.
• Winter is possible, but expect snow and cold—some outings here report sinking into fresh snow even with snowshoes.
