Parking

Use the Lake Louise Lakeshore parking lot. Paid parking is in effect May–October and the lot is often full early; arrive early or use transit/shuttle service (Roam Route 8X and Parks Canada shuttle options). The signed trail begins by the lakeshore boathouse/World Heritage Site rock, a short walk from the parking area.

Best time to go

The route is used year-round. Summer generally offers the clearest footing, while winter travel may involve packed snow and ice; bring traction when conditions require it and check current trail information before setting out.

Safety

Steep uphill and downhill sections on roots and rocks; expect snow or ice in winter. Return by the same path in winter. The loop option beyond Fairview Lookout enters avalanche terrain and requires avalanche training and equipment—do not follow tracks beyond the warning signs. This is bear country: carry bear spray, and check current trail conditions and wildlife notices before departure.

Begin at the Lake Louise lakeshore by the boathouse and World Heritage Site rock, then follow the signs toward Fairview Lookout. The route follows a short lakeshore/forest approach to the signed Fairview turn before climbing through the forest on a rocky, rooty path and short switchbacks to the viewpoint platform. The mapped line follows the approach to the junction and the complete Fairview Lookout path; it excludes the separate loop option beyond the viewpoint.

This is an out-and-back of about 1.5 miles total (1.2 km each way). Parks Canada lists about 100 m of elevation gain and an estimated 45-minute round trip; allow roughly 45–90 minutes depending on pace, footing, and stops.
