Mystic Lake via Johnston Canyon

This is a demanding 21.2-mile (34.2 km) out-and-back from the Johnston Canyon trailhead, with the physical corridor stored once. Allow two days and about 14 hours of hiking, depending on your camp plan and conditions. The route starts among Johnston Canyon’s catwalks and the Ink Pots, then trades the crowds for forest, meadows, Mystic Pass and a quiet alpine lake.

Beyond the Ink Pots, continue to Larry’s Camp, climb Mystic Pass, then take the signed detour to Mystic Lake before returning. Mystic Valley Campground and Larry’s Camp are the practical places to break up the trip. Reserve the required backcountry campsites before you go. At the lake, frame the shoreline with the surrounding peaks for a photo that shows how remote the destination feels.

This is a long, rugged backcountry route, not a day hike with a big turnaround. Expect roots, horse-affected sections, creek crossings and average signage, with the hardest effort around Mystic Pass. Bears are active in this corridor, so carry bear spray, keep it ready and use a map or GPS. Dogs are allowed on leash.

Park at Johnston Canyon along the Bow Valley Parkway (1A), using the overflow area when directed. Moose Meadows is an alternate access that skips the busy canyon section. The route is best suited to experienced hikers who are prepared for changing mountain weather, overnight gear and a permit-based backcountry trip.
