Mirror Lake is the quick-win hike from the Lake Louise lakeshore: a steady forest climb to a pint‑size tarn tucked directly beneath the hulking Big Beehive. Expect a well‑built path, a satisfying workout, and—on calm days—those namesake mirror reflections. The direct route is about 3.0 miles (4.8 km) round‑trip with roughly 820–875 feet (250–266 m) of gain.
Route and experience
Start at the busy Lake Louise lakeshore and follow signs for the Lake Agnes Trail. The grade is steady with switchbacks through dense forest. Views are intermittent on the way up, but do turn around on the switchbacks for peek‑a‑boo looks at Lake Louise far below. When the trees part at Mirror Lake, the Beehive looms right overhead and benches invite a linger. The path is signed; when in doubt, stay on the main Lake Agnes trail.
Seasonality and best time
Summer through early fall offer dry trail and the best chance for glassy reflections—show up early or late in the day when winds are calmer and crowds thinner. In winter, this is one of the area’s most popular short snowshoe outings: you’ll typically walk the lakeshore past the Chateau, then ascend the north side of Lake Louise through the trees to a frozen Mirror Lake. Most people turn around here in winter due to avalanche terrain beyond.
Safety and logistics
Parking at Lake Louise fills very early—arrive at dawn if you can. The trail is not wheelchair accessible and has a sustained climb on dirt/gravel with some rocky sections. In winter, an infrequent avalanche path crosses the trail about 1.8 km from the start, and terrain beyond Mirror Lake is Class 2 avalanche terrain; check the forecast, carry appropriate gear, and turn around if conditions aren’t favorable. Dogs are allowed on leash. No special hiking permit is required, but a Parks Canada entry pass is.

Mirror Lake sits at the base of the Big Beehive, a rounded rock massif that dominates the skyline, in a landscape shaped by glacial forces from the broader Lake Louise basin. Listen and look for birds in the forest—Steller’s jays are occasional show‑offs here.
Extensions
If you’re energized, continue a short way to Lake Agnes and, in snow‑free season, consider the Beehive viewpoints for big panoramas. If you only have an hour or two, Mirror Lake alone is a solid payoff for the time.
