Quartz Hill is a high-alpine ridge walk above Sunshine Village with long, open views and classic Sunshine Meadows scenery. Expect wildflower meadows, shallow lakes glinting below the Continental Divide, and a final push to a quartz-streaked summit that looks across to heavy hitters like Mount Assiniboine and Mount Sir Douglas.
Stats vary a lot depending on where you start. Plan on roughly 26 km (16.2 miles) round-trip and about 1,000 m of gain if you hike from the Sunshine Village base area. Using the gondola and Standish Chairlift (when operating in summer) trims a big chunk of the climbing; parties starting high on the meadows report closer to ~600 m of total gain. The route mixes mellow meadow walking with some steeper ridge sections and a short, straightforward climb to the top.
The meadows can be busy, but traffic thins as you leave the lakes and head for Quartz Hill itself—good news if you want quieter views. Underfoot you’ll notice why it’s named: pale, quartz-rich rock near the summit. It’s exposed terrain—bring layers and a shell. Even in a good year, snow patches or mud can linger into July.
Access is straightforward from Sunshine Village: park at the resort lot, then either grind up the initial 5 km/500 m from the base or pay for lift access to start in the alpine. Once you leave the village/lifts, there are no services—pack water and food. Wildlife is around (marmots for sure, bears occasionally), so travel in a group when you can and carry bear spray.
Important: a user-reported annual closure near Howard Douglas Lake restricts off-trail travel to protect fragile alpine meadows, which can affect how (and when) you legally tag Quartz Hill. Check current official closures and stick to open, signed routes.
Best time to hike: July through September. Wildflowers tend to peak mid-summer; trails are typically snow-free by July in average years. Go early for calmer winds, softer light, and fewer people near the meadows. Afternoon storms are common—watch the sky and be ready to turn around.
Is it worth it? If you love big alpine without a brutal approach, yes—especially if you leverage the lifts. If you’re after a shorter sampler, consider sticking to the Sunshine Meadows lakes and viewpoints and leave Quartz Hill for a longer day.
