About Skoki Valley Loop via Deception Pass
This is Banff’s classic Skoki backcountry loop from the Fish Creek Trailhead near Lake Louise. It is 36.8 km (22.9 miles) round trip and is best treated as a three-day, two-night backpack with about 14 hours of hiking. The route starts with 4 km on the Temple access road before climbing over Boulder Pass and past Ptarmigan Lake to Baker Lake.
From Baker Lake, the loop travels around Fossil Mountain and through the Skoki Valley to historic Skoki Lodge, then continues to Merlin Meadows. It returns over Deception Pass, rejoins the Ptarmigan Lake trail, and retraces the access route to Fish Creek. Baker Lake and Merlin Meadows are the standard camps for the Parks Canada itinerary; Skoki Lodge is a separate lodging option and is not a replacement for a backcountry reservation.
Expect alpine exposure, rough and rocky sections, and confusing junctions where route-finding matters. This is bear country: carry bear spray within reach, make noise, treat water, and keep dogs leashed and under control. Mountain weather can change quickly, and snow can persist on passes into summer.
