Tucked at the south end of Königssee, Gaststätte Saletalm is the classic boat-in lunch stop: a self‑service mountain restaurant with indoor dining rooms and a big beer garden looking up at sheer limestone walls. It’s a five‑minute walk from the Salet landing and a welcome refuel after exploring Obersee.

What to Expect

Think simple, filling alpine fare rather than destination dining. Cold beer, cakes, and Weisswurst are staples; reviewers consistently call the locally caught fish the best bet. Service is counter‑style and brisk, which helps when boats unload in waves. Views from the terrace do a lot of heavy lifting—on a clear day it’s hard to beat.

Operations are seasonal. For the 2025 season it ran April 20–October 12; as of November 20, 2025 it’s closed for winter. It’s cash only. Seating is ample (multiple indoor rooms and a large beer garden), but peak lunch can still feel busy.

Getting There and Nearby

Park at the main Königssee lot in Schönau and ride the electric boat to Salet, then stroll a short, generally easy path to the restaurant. From here, a lakeside track continues along Obersee toward Fischunkelalm—best for sure‑footed hikers. In season you may see cows grazing near the Alm meadows.

Best Time to Visit

• Aim for the first boats of the day or a late‑afternoon slot to dodge the lunch rush.
• Weekdays are mellower than sunny weekends.
• Grab an outdoor table for the views; light is softer and prettier early or late.
• Build buffer time so you’re not rushing for the return ferry.

Practical Notes

Crowds spike when boats dock, lines follow, and card machines don’t exist—bring euros. Amenities are basic at this remote end of the lake; use facilities at Königssee Seelände before boarding. If you’re continuing to Obersee or Fischunkelalm, wear sturdy shoes—the paths aren’t paved.
