Fischunkelalm

Fischunkelalm is a working alpine pasture and seasonal refreshment hut on Obersee’s southeastern shore, about 100 m from the water. Come for the green meadow, old Kaser and the mountain setting at the far end of the lake; expect a drink and simple snack, not a full restaurant meal. It’s a real outing, not a drive-up stop. From the Königssee landing, the boat to Salet takes about an hour each way. From Salet, the walk past Saletalm and around Obersee to Fischunkelalm is 5.5 km round trip, about 1 hour 45 minutes of walking with 119 m of ascent and descent. Add the boat time and check the seasonal Salet timetable, especially the last return sailing.

The path follows Obersee to the far shore through a few narrow, steep sections. One cliff-side stretch has a handrail, and the trail can stay damp even when it hasn’t rained. It’s not suitable for strollers. The Alm also sits just beyond the lake shore, so the hut itself is a short walk across the pasture from the water.

The Kaser is a compact, shingled block-built farm building, with outdoor benches and no indoor dining room. The current hut was built in 1840, replacing an earlier building that burned down. Alm rights are documented from 1486, and the pasture is still used for cattle. Fresh milk and buttermilk are the draw, with simple breads such as cheese or ham rather than a broad menu.

There’s no road around Königssee, so cattle are ferried across the lake and walk the Obersee shore to reach the pasture. The route was widened in 1965 to make room for the cattle drive. In fall, the decorated cattle return across the lake, a reminder that this is still a working alpine farm, not just a hut beside a famous view.

The place-name appears as Viscuncula in a boundary description from 1125. Later records spell it several ways, including Uiscuncula and Viskunkel. Alm rights are documented from 1486. In 1850, two rights shared 50 cattle, and the second right was absorbed in 1919.

From the meadow by the hut, look back across Obersee toward its steep limestone walls and the Watzmann massif. Keep some of the green grazing ground in the foreground to show the scale and setting of the lake; the classic view is part of the walk, not something you get from the boat landing.
