Ramsauer Ache Gorge threads through the Zauberwald—an aptly named “Magic Forest” born from a colossal landslide off the Hochkalter massif about 3,500–4,000 years ago. That rockfall dammed the river and created Lake Hintersee, leaving today’s jumble of giant boulders, mossy trunks, and a fast, crystal‑clear stream. The area is recognized as one of Bavaria’s 100 geotopes, and a footpath established in 1896/97 still guides you through the best of it.
Expect easy riverside walking past emerald pools, small cascades, and house‑sized blocks draped in green. Interpretive signs along the nature trail unpack how the landslide shaped both the Zauberwald and Hintersee and highlight local flora. Views open to the lake if you extend your stroll.
Late spring through autumn is prime, with the most interesting flora from May to July. Winter is beautiful but can be slick. Crowds peak late morning to mid‑afternoon; go early or late day for quieter paths and softer light.
Parking is easiest at Parkplatz Seeklause by Hintersee; it’s pay‑and‑display. Public restrooms are available around Hintersee (including Westufer and the bus stop building), with a seasonal mobile WC at Seeklause. A small kiosk appears in prime months, but don’t bank on it off‑season. If you’re car‑free, use RVO bus 846 (stops include “Hintersee Zauberwald”); the AlmErlebnisBus 847 typically runs seasonally (about May–October).
This is classic limestone and dolomite country shaped by ancient seas and later uplift—look for the river carving around karst blocks. Park‑wide, patient hikers sometimes spot chamois, marmots, deer, butterflies, and raptors (golden eagles are possible); bearded vultures were reintroduced in 2021, though sightings here aren’t guaranteed. Keep voices low and dogs leashed to improve your odds.
You’re on the edge of a strictly protected national park founded in 1973 and part of a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Stay on marked trails, pack out everything, skip drones and fires, and respect any temporary closures aimed at protecting sensitive spots.
