It’s one of the designated viewpoints along North Rim Drive and sees fewer visitors than the popular South Rim, so it often feels quiet and unhurried.

True to its name, this overlook peers into one of the tightest constrictions of the Black Canyon. You’re looking straight down at the Gunnison River squeezed between sheer, dark walls—an excellent spot to appreciate just how abruptly the canyon pinches in. The main viewpoint is set right at the rim for dramatic sightlines.

Getting There & Logistics

The path begins from a small roadside stop on North Rim Drive and reaches the overlook in minutes. Expect a straightforward, easy stroll on a short path through scrubby vegetation to the edge. There are no on‑site services, and reports note little to no cell reception here.

This is a simple stop: a pullout/parking and a short path to a scenic viewpoint. No restrooms, water, or food are available at the overlook; plan to use facilities at the North Rim Ranger Station or campground instead.

Keep an eye out along the path for small mammals like rabbits and squirrels; coyotes are occasionally seen in the area.

Safety Notes

Some initial vantage points along the rim are unprotected. Stay well back from the edge, especially with kids, and stick to the established viewpoint.
