Sunset View Overlook is a quick stop off South Rim Road with a tiny 0.1‑mile stroll to the edge. You’re standing roughly 2,200 feet above the Gunnison River, looking into the Black Canyon’s sheer walls and a long bend in the gorge.

True to its name, this spot shines at day’s end. The canyon turns here, opening sweeping views to the west and north, so the rock faces catch that warm evening glow. It’s one of the South Rim’s popular, easy-access lookouts—great if you’re short on time but still want the drama.

What you’ll see

Expect panoramic cliffs, the ribbon of the Gunnison far below, and long sightlines toward the horizon. As the sun drops, shadows stretch and the walls pick up color, making it a crowd favorite for photos.

Amenities

There’s a dedicated parking area, vault-style restrooms, and a sizeable picnic area right by the overlook. This is a viewpoint stop, not a trailhead, and there’s no water fill station here.

Best time to visit

Late afternoon into sunset is the sweet spot. Arrive 20–30 minutes early to claim a good perch, especially in peak season. If you prefer it quiet, come earlier in the day when crowds thin—light won’t be as warm, but you’ll have space to breathe.

Wildlife

Keep an eye on the sky for birds of prey riding thermals, and you may spot mule deer moving around at dusk. Wildlife viewing is hit-or-miss, but binoculars help.

Photography tips

Golden hour is prime. Bring a tripod if you’re staying through sunset, and a longer lens to compress canyon layers. A headlamp makes the walk back to the car easy after dark.
