Bulcamatta Falls

Overview

A modest cascade tucked in a ferny gully, Bulcamatta Falls is all about atmosphere over height. By day it’s a tranquil, shaded nook; after dark the cliffs shimmer with glow worms, turning a short stroll into a seriously memorable experience.

The Walk

The track begins at Burralow Creek Campground and is roughly 2.7 km return. It’s an easy, family‑friendly path with recent upgrades like a small bridge, stepping stones, and stone stairs—straightforward even for casual walkers. Footing is mostly good but unpaved, so wear decent shoes.

What You’ll See

• Daylight: a cool, fern‑lined gully with trickling water, craggy rocks and lush forest.
• Night: thousands of bioluminescent glow worms speckling the damp cliffs. Keep lights low and red‑filtered to let the glow build.

Wildlife

Expect varied birdlife in the valley. In summer, this area is known for the endangered giant dragonfly. There’s also a chance of spotting koalas in the broader Burralow Creek area.

Logistics & Amenities

You’ll park and set off from Burralow Creek Campground, where basic facilities (including toilets) are available. There are no shops or potable water—bring everything you need. The approach road can be rough and is best tackled cautiously; after rain it may suit 4WDs more than standard cars.

Best Time to Visit

• For glow worms: visit after dark and use a red‑light torch; avoid white light and camera flash.
• For a quiet stroll: daytime is peaceful, and this track sees fewer crowds than the big-name Blue Mountains spots.
• After heavy rain: the road can degrade—check conditions and drive accordingly.

Extra Notes

This pocket of the Blue Mountains shows classic sandstone country. Along the broader valley you’ll encounter hints of local history, including a convict‑era feature on routes nearby. Warm layers help—nights in the gully can feel cool even in warmer months.
