Grose Head South Lookout

Overview

Grose Head South Lookout is the real-deal wilderness viewpoint: a raw rock platform hanging over the Lower Grose Valley with nothing but cliffs, forests, and deep silence. No railings, no platforms, no tour buses—just a huge horizon and that classic Blue Mountains blue haze.

Getting There

Most people start from the end of White Cross Road in Winmalee and follow the Blue Gum Swamp Walk and Shaws Ridge Trail toward the Springwood Ridge. A steep side path makes the final push to the lookout. Expect a solid outing on foot or by bike; a scenic loop via Blue Gum Swamp and Shaws Ridge comes in around 13 km. Mountain bikers can ride most of it, but that last climb often means hopping off and pushing.

What You’ll See

From the rock shelf, you’re looking straight into the Lower Grose—down to the confluence of Springwood Creek and the Grose River—then out toward Bowen Mountain, Kurrajong, and the distant Womerah Ranges. On a clear day the layers stack beautifully, and the valley feels vast and untouched.

Wildlife

Blue Gum Swamp at the start of the walk is famed for birdlife. Listen for lyrebirds and keep an eye out for gang-gang cockatoos and, with luck, a powerful owl at dusk. Wallabies sometimes graze the quieter edges of the track.

On-the-Ground Reality

This is an unfenced, exposed rock lookout. The approach is steep near the end, and the rock can be slick after rain. There are no toilets, water, or shelter anywhere along the route—come self-sufficient.

Who It’s For

If you want solitude and big views without the tourist infrastructure, this is your spot. If you prefer short strolls with rails and signage, pick another lookout.

Best Time to Visit

Hit sunrise or sunset for soft light and long valley shadows; in winter, the air can be crisp and the stars pop after dark. Weekdays see the fewest people. Clear, still mornings offer the most reliable views. There are no formal opening hours.
