Overview

Silver Cascades is a series of stepped waterfalls on Victoria Creek, just upstream of Victoria Falls. The cascades tumble over sandstone shelves into a clear pool that’s perfect for a post-hike cool-off. It feels tucked-away and tranquil, thanks to a decent descent that keeps the crowds down.

The Walk

You’ll reach Silver Cascades via the Victoria Falls walking track. The path is well-defined but steep with many stairs and rocky sections, dropping roughly 400m before you get to the water. Leave extra energy for the slog back up; it’s the part everyone talks about.

Swimming & Safety

The pool at the base is deep enough for a proper swim and is wonderfully refreshing after the hike. Take it slow on the slick rock around the water—surfaces can be very slippery when wet. After rain, expect mud and a messier track.

What Makes It Special

The layered rock and flowing steps give the cascades a sculpted look, with pretty reflections on the sandstone. It’s a peaceful spot where you can linger without the bustle you’ll find at the big-name lookouts.

Make It a Bigger Day

Continue a short way down the track to reach the top of Victoria Falls for another dramatic perspective, or keep going further if you’ve got the legs for it.

Facilities

There are no facilities at the falls themselves. A basic non-flush toilet is available near the car park at the start of the walk, and that trailhead is reached via an unsealed gravel road.

Best Time to Visit

  • Early morning or late afternoon for softer light on the sandstone and fewer people.
  • Warm days make the swim delightful, but avoid peak heat for the climb out.
  • Skip after heavy rain if you’re not comfortable with mud and slippery rock.

Pros

  • Multi-tiered falls with a clear, swimmable pool
  • Quieter and more secluded than many popular spots

Cons

  • Steep, strenuous return climb
  • Access via a long unsealed gravel road

Tips

  • Budget 45–60 minutes each way and extra time to swim.
  • Carry plenty of water; the climb back up is a workout.
  • Expect slippery rock—good shoes are essential.
  • The access road is unsealed; drive slowly and allow 10–20 minutes.
  • Pair this stop with a quick detour to the top of Victoria Falls.
