Challenging

Short, punchy, and wildly scenic—this out-and-back drops from the cliff-top lookout above the Grose Valley to Victoria Creek’s cascades and the base of Victoria Falls. Expect a sustained descent on steps and rocky path, then the same in reverse to get out. Total distance is about 4 km/2.5 miles return, with a steep climb that feels every bit of it.
From the carpark at the end of Victoria Falls Road, a quick 100–120 m stroll reaches Victoria Falls Lookout for expansive Grose Valley views. The main track then zigzags down the sandstone escarpment, shifting from open eucalypt to a cooler, ferny gully. Just before the main falls, short side paths reach the pretty Victoria Creek Cascades and viewpoints near the top of the falls. The base of Victoria Falls sits in a shady, fern-lined amphitheatre—great for photos, a snack break, and a refreshing splash on warm days.
This walk is all about the return climb: steep, stepped, and sustained. Plan on roughly 2–2.5 hours total for most hikers, with 60–90 minutes of that for the ascent alone. The track is formed and easy to follow, but expect narrow sections, rocky steps, and occasionally wet, slippery rock near water. No technical scrambling, but caution near cliff edges is essential.
You’ll pass classic Blue Mountains sandstone layers (Hawkesbury and Narrabeen) and lush pockets of rainforest as you drop into the gully. Birdlife is common—listen for cockatoos—and the creek supports aquatic life around the pools and cascades.
Spring and autumn are the sweet spot: comfortable temps, wildflowers, and reliably flowing water. In summer, the base stays pleasantly cool and shaded, but start early—climbing out in the heat is rough. Winter brings crisp air and clear views; take care on slick sections after rain.
There’s a carpark at the end of unsealed Victoria Falls Road (generally fine for 2WD). Dogs aren’t permitted on this national park track.
End of Victoria Falls Road at the clifftop carpark (unsealed but usually 2WD accessible). Arrive early on weekends; no facilities on the track.
Steep, stepped descent/ascent with narrow, rocky sections; wet rocks and cliff edges demand care, especially after rain. Allow 60–90 minutes for the climb out and carry ample water.
