Overview
This is the definition of high reward for low effort: a short out‑and‑back to a broad, unfenced sandstone platform perched on the rim of the Grose Valley. Expect front‑row views of the sheer sandstone “walls” that give the lookout its name, with a quieter, more secluded vibe than the busier Katoomba and Wentworth Falls viewpoints. Total distance is about 1.8 miles (return), and most people spend 1–1.5 hours including photo time.
The experience
From the car park on Pierces Pass Road (off Bells Line of Road), the narrow bush track rolls over natural dirt and rock with some steps and uneven sections. Early on, low heath and eucalypt forest keep things enclosed before the country opens up toward the cliff rim. The finale is a spacious, unfenced rock platform—epic for photography and simply soaking in the scale of the Grose Valley and its towering Triassic sandstone escarpments. On a clear day you can orient to well‑known cliff‑top landmarks lining the valley: Anvil Rock and Perrys Lookdown to the left, and Baltzer Lookout/Hanging Rock to the right.
Best time to hike
It’s a year‑round walk, but spring and autumn bring the most comfortable temps and spring wildflowers in the heath. Summer can be hot and exposed—start early and bring sun protection and water. Winter delivers crisp air and light crowds; just know morning fog can wipe out the views. Photographers: golden hour lights up the “walls,” and sunset can be outstanding when conditions are clear and winds are calm.
Safety and suitability
The lookout is unfenced with sheer drops—supervise kids closely and keep well back from edges, especially in wet or windy weather. The surface is rocky and uneven in places, so wear grippy shoes. This track isn’t suitable for wheelchairs or strollers, and dogs aren’t permitted on national park walking tracks.
Logistics
Park at the Pierces Pass Road car park; there’s an information board at the trailhead. There are no toilets or water here—come prepared. The track is straightforward to follow out and back. If you want a bit more walking without losing the views, you can combine this with nearby Rigby Hill from the same parking area.
